Child Protection & Welfare Commission- Save the Children sign Memorandum of Understanding for establishing Children Protection Units   at Lower Dir & Battagram

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection and Welfare Commission (CPWC)  & Save the Children, in an auspicious ceremony signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for establishing District based Child Protection Systems in the improvised districts of Battagram and Lower Dir.  The signing ceremony was attended by David Skinner Country Director Save the Children Pakistan program, Dr Meher Taj Roghani, advisor for Social Welfare KPK, Dr Murad Ali Afridi (Chief Protection Officer) and Dr Parveen Azam Khan Chief Executive Dost foundation.

Dr Meher Taj Roghani, lauded the efforts of Child Protection & Welfare Commission & Save the Children in initiating broad based community programs and assured the support of the government in addressing the fundamental rights of children.

David Skinner in a brief meeting with Dr Murad Ali Afridi discussed the prevailing child rights issues such as growing number of street children, corporal punishment and early child marriages and explored how Save the Children in collaboration with the government can devise effective programs for securing a better future for our children. Dr Murad also shared that there is growing number of children are becoming orphans and disable as result of terrorist incidents.

Through signing of this MOU, KP-CPWC with the financial support of Save the Children will be establishing two Child Protection Units that will engage community groups in sensitization of key issues such as birth registration, teacher absenteeism, early child marriages and child labor. These community groups once organized will be working alongside the government line departments of social welfare, education, health ,law enforcements agencies and local government for establishing a district based coordination and referral mechanism for vulnerable children.

Both the parties are proactively engaged in training of the staff members of the pre-established Child Protection Units in eight districts of KPK province. These officials are being trained on case management, community mobilization and developing effective referrals system. Furthermore, Save the Children will provide technical, institutional and financial assistance to the KP CPWC, Department of Social Welfare in Battagram and Lower Dir for strengthening of the Child Protection Units in both districts and putting in place a Child Protection System by December 2015.
